Tucked away in the mesmerising hills of Meghalaya, Rainbow Falls in Cherrapunji is a hidden gem that captivates every traveller with its surreal beauty. Known for its breathtaking views and the unique rainbow that forms around its cascading waters, this stunning waterfall is an absolute must-visit for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. About Rainbow Falls: A Hidden Paradise

Rainbow Falls is aptly named for the rainbow that forms at the base of the falls on sunny days, thanks to the spray and mist created by the plunging water. The falls are approximately 30 meters (100 feet) high and nestled in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The crystal-clear water cascades into a natural pool surrounded by thick foliage, creating a tranquil and scenic atmosphere. The location of the falls, combined with its vibrant rainbow, offers visitors an ethereal experience, making it one of the most beautiful and lesser-known waterfalls in the region.

How to Reach Rainbow Falls

Reaching Rainbow Falls requires a bit of an adventure. The falls are located around 8 km from the town of Cherrapunji, but it is not accessible by road. To get to the waterfall, visitors must first trek from the village of Tyrna to Nongriat, the starting point for the famous trek to Double Decker Living Root Bridge. The trek to the bridge is challenging, with over 3,500 steps, and can take about three to four hours. From the Living Root Bridge, it is another 1.5-hour trek to Rainbow Falls. The trek to Rainbow Falls is not for the faint-hearted, but it offers stunning views of dense forests, natural pools, and rivers. The route is a mix of stone steps and narrow trails, and it is recommended to wear sturdy shoes and carry enough water. The peaceful surroundings and the opportunity to witness one of nature’s most enchanting spectacles make the effort worthwhile.

The Best Time to Visit Rainbow Falls

The best time to visit Rainbow Falls is during the post-monsoon season, from September to November. During this period, the rainfall in the region subsides, and the water levels of the falls are perfect—neither too high nor too low. The lush greenery and the surrounding forest come alive after the monsoons, adding to the charm of the trek. The chances of witnessing the stunning rainbow formation at the base of the falls are also higher during this time, thanks to the amalgamation of sunlight and mist from the flowing water. While the waterfalls can be visited year-round, the monsoon season (June to August) is not ideal due to heavy rains and slippery trails.
