A Journey Through the Sacred Sites of Prayagraj Hanuman Mandir
The Prayagraj Hanuman Mandir, in the centre of the holy city of Prayagraj, stands out for its spiritual significance and historical splendour. This precious shrine, visited by innumerable followers, is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the embodiment of strength, devotion, and humility. The temple, known for its distinctive representation of Lord Hanuman in a reclining pose, is a must-see for anybody seeking divine blessings and insight into the rich tapestry of Indian spirituality and culture.
Hanuman Ji Prayagaraj History
The Lete Hue Hanuman Ji Prayagraj temple has a rich and ancient past. The temple is thought to have been built during the Mughal Empire, while the exact dates remain unknown. According to local stories, the temple was built by a local monarch who was a devoted disciple of Lord Hanuman. He envisioned a huge shrine where devotees might seek Hanuman Ji's blessings and be protected against all types of evil and adversity. As per another view, It is thought that the temple dates back about 700 years. Old legends state that the King of Kannauj transported this deity by boat across the Ganga River from Vindhyachal to his realm. He stopped for a night's stay at Prayag while travelling. The idol drowned in the river when the boat broke down at night. Over the ages, the temple has undergone numerous repairs and restorations, each adding to its architectural splendour and spiritual atmosphere. The reclining image of Hanuman Ji in the temple's sanctum sanctorum radiates a serene, heavenly spirit that draws pilgrims from all over the world.
Hanuman Ji in a Unique Position
The "Lete Hue Hanuman Ji" idol, which is a prominent element of the Prayagraj Hanuman Mandir, is a depiction of Lord Hanuman in a reclining posture. This idol faces north, while its legs point south. For decades, followers have been fascinated and motivated by this unique picture of Hanuman, which differs from standard depictions of the deity standing or in a dynamic position. Hanuman in a reclining position represents calm, relaxation, and the ever-present watchfulness of the godly guardian. According to legend, Lord Hanuman chose this location for his eternal rest after fulfilling his earthly responsibilities and bestowing blessings on the area and its inhabitants.
The temple is also known as the Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir due to the large and intimidating stature of the Hanuman idol. Standing at an amazing height, this larger-than-life monument of Hanuman Ji inspires devotion and amazement in everyone who sees it. The idol's sheer enormity demonstrates Lord Hanuman's heavenly power and magnanimity, reminding worshippers of his undying devotion to Lord Rama and unflinching strength in the face of adversity.
This temple is an underground pit containing a massive laying idol of Hanumanji that is six to seven feet below ground. This is the world's only Lord Hanuman temple with the idol reclining. According to folklore, Hanuman rested here after destroying Lanka.
Spiritual Practices and Festivities
The temple is revered for its significance during the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious gathering, held every twelve years in Prayagraj. Throughout the year, the Prayagraj Hanuman Mandir buzzes with spiritual events and festivities. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, considered auspicious days for worshipping Hanuman Ji, a large number of devotees gather to perform special prayers and rituals. One of the temple's primary festivals is Hanuman Jayanti, commemorating Lord Hanuman's birth. The temple is adorned with flowers and lights, and special rituals are held to honour the divine birth of this beloved deity.
