Meghalaya Travel Itinerary

Meghalaya is a charming state in North-Eastern India. Its name is derived from Sanskrit, meaning “the abode of clouds”. It was formed in 1972, and is renowned as the Scotland of the East. It is also known for being the wettest region in India where about 70% of its area is covered by forests. These forests are home to many animals, plants and birds. Combined with the other picturesque attractions, Meghalaya is one of the best places to visit in North-Eastern India.

Day 1

 
Begin your trip with a visit to Cherrapunji. It is one of the wettest places on Earth, and experiences the highest rainfall in the country over a calendar year. While in Cherrapunji, you can explore some magnificent natural attractions such as the Nohkalikai Waterfalls, the living root bridge, the Mawsmai Cave and others. This should take between 4 to 5 hours, post which you can dig into some mouth-watering Sohra delicacies such as Sohra Pulao and Pork Momos. Pair this with some freshly prepared rice beer - another speciality of Cherrapunji, and take a stroll through Cherrapunji before returning to the hotel by evening.

Day 2

 
On the second day, you can explore Shillong, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Meghalaya. This city is popularly known as “The Scotland of the East”, credit to its tranquil climate and scenic beauty. Visit popular places of interest in Shillong such as Don Bosco Museum, The Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak and more. Add this town to your Meghalaya travel itinerary and embrace the panoramic views it offers. You can tour Shillong till late afternoon and travel to Mawsynram for the next day’s activities.

Day 3

 
Rise early and explore the serene hamlet that is Mawsynram. This village is known to receive the highest amount of rainfall in India. Be sure to carry an umbrella as unexpected drizzles are a common occurrence here. This borough also features panoramic landscapes and misty weather that blends together to create a wonderful atmosphere. Add Mawsynram to your Meghalaya trip itinerary to truly relish being one with nature. Return to the hotel by evening and spend some time relaxing or shopping for souvenirs.

Day 4

 
On the fourth day, you can head over to Dawki River, which is located about 3 hours away. This pristine lake features clear waters that beckons a boat ride. The waters of this lake are so clear that the aquatic creatures and the river bed are easily visible. Take plenty of photos to capture the magnificence of this location. Upon exploring the Dawki river, stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant and indulge in some authentic, local delicacies. Next up, you can head over to Kyllang Rock, which is a mammoth made out of red stone. You can head back to Mawsynram for the night and pamper yourself to some relaxation.

Day 5

 

On the last day you can visit Laitlum Canyon, which is a spectacular waterfall located about 2 hours and 20 minutes away. After being awe-struck bby the beauty of the cascading waterfall, you can explore nearby natural attractions such as Ward’s Lake and Elephant Falls. Grab a bite of Jadoh or Pork Thali which is the staple food of the locals. You can return to your hotel by late afternoon and kick back after the fun-filled sightseeing.
