Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is an appealing destination in Northeast India that boasts a unique cultural blend, historical significance, and beautiful landscapes. If you are in Bangladesh and looking to explore Agartala, there are several convenient travel options. Whether you prefer the speed of air travel or the scenic journey by road or train, reaching Agartala from Bangladesh has become increasingly easier over the years. Let us explore the different modes of transportation available and what you can expect from each.
By Air: The Quickest Route
The fastest way to reach Agartala from Bangladesh is air travel. There is no direct flight from Dhaka to Agartala, but travellers can take a flight from Dhaka to Kolkata or Guwahati and then board a domestic flight to Agartala. Agartala's Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IXA) is well-connected to various Indian cities, including Kolkata, Guwahati, and Delhi, making air travel a comfortable and time-efficient choice. While this route may involve a layover, it offers the convenience of faster travel, usually around three to four hours in total, excluding the layover time.
By Train: A Scenic Journey
Train enthusiasts can opt for a train journey from Bangladesh to Agartala, which provides scenic views of both countries. The Maitree Express connects Dhaka to Kolkata, and from Kolkata, you can take Kanchanjunga Express to Agartala via Guwahati. The Indian Railways also operates trains to Agartala from various parts of Northeast India, including Guwahati and Kolkata. Recently, a direct Akhaura-Agartala train route has been proposed to improve connectivity between the two regions, although it is yet to be fully operational. Until then, the route via Kolkata remains the primary train option. While the train journey can take around 24 to 36 hours, it is a cost-effective and scenic way to travel, allowing you to experience the changing landscapes.
Dhaka to Agartala by Road: For Adventurers and Nature Lovers
For those who prefer road trips, travelling from Bangladesh to Agartala offers an exciting adventure. The journey starts from Dhaka and crosses the Akhaura Border near Agartala. The Dhaka-Agartala route spans roughly 150 km, and the border crossing at Akhaura is the most convenient entry point. Once you cross the border, it is just a short drive to Agartala, making the entire trip around 4 to 6 hours by car or bus, depending on traffic and border clearance time. There are also cross-border buses that operate between Dhaka and Agartala. These buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and offer a more budget-friendly alternative to air travel. The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC) jointly operate this service. The buses depart from Dhaka and drop passengers at Agartala after crossing the Akhaura Border. The bus journey typically takes around 6 to 7 hours, including the time for border formalities.
The Best Time to Visit Agartala
The best time to travel from Bangladesh to Agartala is during the winter months (November to February) when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. Summers can be hot, and the monsoon season brings heavy rains, which can disrupt travel plans.
